Shenandoah Valley Rail Trail Feasibility Study Authorized by General Assembly

The General Assembly passed a budget amendment authorizing the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation to study the feasibility of a Shenandoah Valley Rail Trail project. The feasibility study is an important next step in the ongoing exploration of converting the discontinued Norfolk Southern rail line into a multi-purpose trail.

This project enjoys broad support from the community with mayors, town council members, county representatives and non-profits along the corridor as members of the Shenandoah Rail Trail Exploratory Partnership. As Alliance Executive Director Kate Wofford said in this article in the Virginia Mercury,

What these communities want to do is make this forgotten rail corridor into something that breathes life back into the region.
